A county-wide system provides educational opportunities in 20 elementary schools, 6 mid schools, and 7 high schools.  Two schools are devoted to special education.   There are two parochial schools, one supported by the Roman Catholic and one by the Christian Reformed Churches.  The University of New Mexico-Gallup Branch provides accredited courses through two years of attendance as well as non-credit community education courses.

Gallup-McKinley County Schools

Beginning in 1999, the Gallup-McKinley County School System will have 20 elementary schools, six mid and junior schools and seven high schools. These facilities are located in ten communities situated throughout the 5,000 square mile district (an area roughly the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined). The two most distant schools are 100 highway miles apart. To serve its 14,440 students, the District hires 1,850 employees and utilizes 165 school buses. The student body is 85 percent Native American and 15% other. The pupil/teacher ratio is 20.5 to 1. The beginning salary for teachers is $23,450, with a total payroll of approximately $36 million. The Districts operational budget for 1998-99 was $57,932,608.

Rehoboth Christian School

Rehoboth Christian School is the premier educational organization for children in K-12th grade in northwest New Mexico. Founded in 1903 by the Christian Reformed Church, Rehoboth has nearly 100 years of experience in providing quality education to our region’s diverse community. Rehoboth’s highly qualified and experienced staff members serve as friends and mentors for students. University of New Mexico-Gallup Campus

The University of New Mexico at Gallup campus is home to approximately 4,000 students. Located near the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Reservations, the university has the largest Native American student body of a public university in the world, and awards close to $5,000,000 annually in tribal, federal and state grants as well as private, civic and corporate grants and scholarships.

Located in Gallup, New Mexico, the adobe-style facilities sit among some of the most beautiful red rock country in the Southwest. The university’s mission includes provision of post-secondary educational opportunities to all individuals; degree programs including Certificates, Associate Degrees, Bachelor Degrees, and Upper Division and Graduate classes and courses; adult basic education, GED classes and testing, English as a second language and citizenship classes; area vocational education, and community education and services. Western New Mexico University-Gallup

WNMU was founded in 1893 as one of New Mexico Territory’s two normal schools for teacher training. The WNMU Gallup Graduate Studies Center was established in 1983 to bring university-based professional development opportunities to Northwest New Mexico. Consistent with WNMU’s mission and the school district’s needs, the university offers graduate programs in special education, educational leadership, TESOL endorsement, educational technology, counseling, and an MBA program which began in the Fall of 1999. The Gallup Graduate Studies Center multi-disciplinary curriculum integrates theory and practice for critique, modification and application by teachers, counselors and administrators working in a multicultural context. The Center’s faculty practice what they teach, modeling experiential teaching methods, accounting for diverse learning styles and providing a range of assessment techniques. Faculty solicit input of students and frontline educators to update a curriculum centered on student needs. The Gallup Graduate Studies Center has recently moved into a new 7,000 square foot facility with Internet-accessed computer labs, classrooms, and offices in one location. University of Phoenix
